Irish music in Czechia

Ondřej Volčík became closely acquainted with Irish traditional music in 2004 – 2005. He learned the basics of Irish fiddle style at today’s Bernard’s Summer School in Prague. In July 2007 he visited Belfast. The local scene completely enchanted him and he has been returning to the north of Ireland ever since, developing his style by attending private lessons with Belfast musicians and his repertoire has been heavily influenced by sessions at Maddens Bar, Hercules Bar, Duke of York and Garrick Bar. Later he extended his interest to the whole of the north of Ireland by exploring the musical traditions of County Tyrone, Armagh and Donegal. His greatest inspirations are the fiddlers Donal O’Connor, Shane Mc Aleer, Ruadhrai O’Kane, Paul Bradley and Bríd Harper, not to mention his abiding admiration for the style of Tommy Peoples.

He co-founded the band Ceol Flies (now the trio Bar Fast the Door) with multi-instrumentalist Eoghan O’ Reilly and was one of the founding members of Dálach while studying in Brno, where he organizes regular sessions.
